Orthodontics is perhaps one of the oldest independent specialties of dentistry. It involves the identification of the shape and positional abnormalities of the teeth, the extension of the teeth and the jaw bones, prevention and the treatment of abnormalities. In prevention, the goal is to ensure the normal development of the dentition, eliminating obstructive conditions. This ensures that the teeth perform their original function (chewing) well and are aesthetically located in the oral cavity. Treatment involves restoring the developed pathological deviations.
Types of orthodontic appliances
Nowadays, not only one type of orthodontic system exists. We can choose between external or internal fixed braces, or even clear aligners, so-called invisible braces.
External braces:
In this case, the arch wire of the orthodontic appliance is attached to the outer curve of the dentition. There are orthodontic appliances with brackets fixed to metal or porcelain, the latter of which is less conspicuous and therefore more commonly used in adulthood.
Lingual braces:
The braces can be attached to the inner curve of the dentition, making it invisible to external observers. This procedure is more expensive than traditional external orthodontic treatment, but the the tongue is more exposed to the risk of injury.
Clear braces:
A less complicated procedure that can be used is the clear brace, or also known as invisible braces. After taking an impression, the rail is made with the help of a machine, which is replaced every few weeks until the desired effect is achieved. Since this brace is removable from the teeth, it is easier to keep the teeth clean under the braces.
Time for braces
The duration of orthodontic treatment depends on the problem to be treated and the type of orthodontic appliance. Traditional braces fixed to the outer or inner arch typically need to be worn for 12-24 months. After that, a retainer device is usually worn for 3-6 months to ensure lasting results. Depending on the problem to be treated, the so-called invisible braces can last up to 10-24 months for treatment.
Teeth cleaning with braces
Keeping the orthodontic appliance clean is crucial during treatment. Since bacteria and plaque adhere much more easily to the orthodontic appliance and its surroundings, the risk of tooth decay increases. Alongside wearing the orthodontic appliance, it is essential to brush your teeth twice a day and clean between your teeth once a day. To keep the orthodontic appliance clean, you can also use a single-toothbrush, an electric toothbrush, or a water flosser. The use of antibacterial mouthwashes also helps prevent tooth decay.
